Japanese Juku

My Five Minute Speech

Here’s the text from my speech in Inazawa yesterday. Can you understand it? I’ll post some translation later. For now, give it a look see:

最近少し敬語を勉強したので、段々丁寧な話方も分かるように成ってきました。そして、よく行くレストランで今まで 何回聞いても分からなかった「ご注文は以上で宜しいですか?」や「ご注文がお決まりに成ったら仰って下さい。」等の意味が分かった時私は子供のように大喜びしました。

  1. replying to an old post, but just wanted to comment to suggest easying up on the kanjis for grammatical forms. things like 為、に就いて、之で、等 would feel much more natural in kana. At first I thought you were doing this on purpose but i’m not sure. Since this is from 2008, I’m sure you’ve corrected this by now though, or it was purely intentional and I didn’t get the point.

  2. Thanks for the comment. I started this blog several years ago and then let it sit. There may only be five posts in total. The idea was to offload language instruction topics from my main blog which was supposed to be more about the experience of living in Japan.

I may read through these posts again and think about whether to revitalize this blog. Definitely I love using kanji and – as you pointed out – there are many cases where native speakers prefer to write things out. I am now married to a Japanese woman and she often tells me, “please don’t write that in kanji!”
